President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has reminded members of the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) that they are an organ of state, with the primary role to protect the sovereignty, integrity and asset base of the country.

Speaking during the tour of the Eastern Military Garrison in Selebi Phikwe on March 13, President Masisi said the creed by which the BDF was formed resonated with the foundational creed as embedded in the Constitution of Botswana.

“The definition of Botswana must always be your guiding torch,” stated President Masisi.

He reminded them that they were the only group in the security cluster who pledged to lose their lives if need be, in defence of their country.

“I too as the Commander in Chief am also prepared to lose my life in defence of this country,” he said.

President Masisi also informed BDF members about the review of the BDF Scheme of Service to improve the conditions of service for members.

He said government engaged Tsa Badiri Consultancy to review conditions of service for the BDF.

He highlighted that the salary structure of the BDF had been re-aligned to that of the public service, adding that the entry level of the BDF was raised from B3 to B1 salary scale effective April.

Second Brigade Commander responsible for the Eastern sector, Brigadier Joseph Seelo informed Dr Masisi that the Eastern Military Garrison had the best gym facility that provided physical, mental and spiritual alertness, enabling soldiers to operate at the highest performance levels during periods of increased stress.

Through community partnerships, he said Eastern Military Garrison enjoyed unparalleled support from the community.

He said soldiers at EMG were dedicated professionals who served their country selflessly and were fortunate to be surrounded by helpful and friendly communities that played a major role in making the garrison homely.

Dr Masisi also appreciated the military equipment at the garrison, planted a tree and went on to tour the facility clinic and office project for military police. ENDS
