138 enroll at GIPS Phakalane

There are 138 students enrolled at GIPS faculty of technology in Phakalane, says Assistant Minister of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology, Mr Fidelis Molao.
He said 38 of them were doing advanced diploma in automotive electrical engineering; 13 were doing advanced diploma in motor vehicle body repair and refinishing while 87 were doing advanced diploma in diesel plant engineering.
Mr Molao told Parliament that there were 10 staff members with bachelors’ degree qualification, one with a diploma qualification and two with certificate qualification, adding that out of 13 lecturers, nine were Batswana.
He said he was aware that one lecturer was engaged to offer advanced diploma in automotive electrical engineering and two lecturers with certificates were engaged to offer advanced diploma in motor vehicle body repair and refinishing.
The assistant minister said the requirement was that a lecturer of a learning programme should have a qualification one level higher than the programme being delivered.
Member of Parliament for Gaborone North, Mr Haskins Nkaigwa had asked the minister to state the number of students enrolled at Gaborone Institute of Professional Studies (GIPS) in Phakalane and for which courses, and how many of the lecturers were employed with degree, diploma and certificate qualifications.
He also asked how many lecturers were Batswana, and if he was aware that despite students undertaking higher national diploma they were being taught by lecturers with diploma and certificate qualifications and what was being done to address the situation. ENDS
