Selebi Phikwe Town Council (SPTC) is expected to undertake 61 Ipelegeng projects in the 2019/2020 financial year at an estimated cost of P15 million.
Ipelegeng programme is a government programme whose main aim is to provide short term employment and relief while at the same time carrying out essential purely labour-intensive projects that had been identified and prioritised through the normal development planning process.
Ipelegeng coordinator Mr Tidimalo Onneng informed Selebi Phikwe Urban Development Committee members meeting that the projects included minor construction, grass cutting in government facilities, litter-picking around town, culvert de-silting and cleaning of roads.
He said that the minor construction projects included construction of a guard room at Boswelakgomo and Reuben Mpabanga primary schools and construction of a bin cage at Segomotso Primary School.
In addition he said there would be an erection of three carport shades at Rekakgona Centre, Botshabelo Community Hall, Tebogo Primary School and SHAA office.
Mr Onneng said the labour intensive projects were expected to commence on April 1 while technical projects would commence on May 1.
He said both unskilled and skilled labourers would be engaged for implementation of the technical projects.
A total of 1 601 beneficiaries would be engaged on a monthly basis.
Ipelegeng programme is also linked to the eleventh National Development Plan (NDP 11), Vision 2036 and Sustainable Development Goals through the empowerment of the poor, people living with disabilities and the elderly by creating temporary employment for them.
Meanwhile, Mr Onneng said out of the requested amount, P925 232 was budget for additional beneficiaries during the 2017/2018 financial year.
The funds, he said, would be used to cover labour costs, material costs and the sustenance of the initiative.
The labour costs amount to about P11 million while the material and sustenance costs amount to P253 957 and P3 million respectively.
In addition, Mr Onneng said Ipelegeng programme also took into account the sustainable environment goals through which issues of waste management were being considered through litter picking and community education on waste management as well as law enforcement by engaging Green Scorpions.
The report was approved by the Urban Development Committee and further approved by councillors during a special full council meeting. ENDS
