BOU provides universal access to education
12 Mar 2019
Botswana Open University (BOU) serves the country as a vehicle of continuing education and life-long learning, BOU deputy vice chancellor-student affairs, Ms Miriam Maroba has said.
Speaking during launch of the Botswana Open University in Palapye and unveiling its new brand recently, Ms Maroba said BOU continued to uphold government’s commitment to provide universal access to education through its core business of teaching, learning and research.
Ms Maroba said the university was well positioned to assist government in its vision of ‘Achieving Prosperity for All’ by 2036 through human development pillar, which called for a knowledgeable Botswana society with relevant quality outcome-based education that would provide lifelong learning and training opportunities.
She said BOU was a mass university with flexible, inclusive and widely accessible programmes that would be recognised globally for academic excellence, research and innovation by 2036.
Additionally, Ms Maroba said most of BOU service beneficiaries were Batswana who work for the public and private sector as well as civil society organisations in various parts of the country, adding that currently BOU had about 4000 active tertiary students.
She said the Palapye Regional Campus, being one of the five BOU campuses across the country, ensured that services were brought closer to the people allowing for extensive geographical penetration that removes distance as a barrier to learning.
She noted that through the Palapye campus, BOU presented a unique opportunity for the people in the central district as a whole to access quality education and training.
Ms Maroba said through the campus in Palapye, BOU’s objective to uplift the lives of the people in the area by offering them an opportunity to study through the open and distance learning methodology is achieved. ENDS
