Sankoyo project to motivate public officers

11 Mar 2019

Lack of basic amenities such as electricity, accommodation and water have been identified as factors resulting in some public officers declining transfers and appointments to rural areas.

Those who overstayed in rural areas were fighting for transfers to areas with better facilities.

It was against this backdrop that some village development committees (VDCs) made an effort to provide suitable accommodation.

One such is Sankoyo Village Development Committee in the Ngamiland District which collaborated with Sankoyo Tshwaragano Management Trust to construct a solar power work station.

It was reported that the trust submitted over P500 000 to the VDC to undertake community development projects and solar power emerged a priority since the village was not connected to the national grid.

In an interview, Kgosi Gokgathang Moalosi confirmed that the project was completed in November last year.

He commended the contractor for a job well done since the project was completed on time and within budget.

Kgosi Moalosi said the project would boost the village economy and also attract public servants.

He said all VDC houses were electrified including tribal facilities noting that the development would improve service delivery at the kgotla.

“We are thankful to our community trust and VDC for their visionary leadership. Their efforts to transform the image of our village are visible,” he said.

Kgosi Moalosi explained that the leadership and other stakeholders had a plan to develop the village.

Some of the planned projects he said included connection of stand pipes to individual homesteads in the village.

He said the trust and VDC had paid over P200 000 to Water Utilities Corporation last year to connect 40 households though the project was delayed.

Further, he said the community approved P500 000 for upgrading of one of the trust’s camp site, Kazikini with the hope to create employment and generate income to carry out more projects.

Kgosi Molalosi said they wanted the facilities at the camp site to be aligned to the Okavango Delta Management Plan. ENDS
