Gaborone-Boatle road nears completion

10 Mar 2019

Boatle-Gaborone dual carriage way road will be open for traffic within a month.

The Department of Roads project officer, Ms Palesa Mokote-Tshabaesele told the South East District Council meeting recently that the construction, which started on March 24 last year, was anticipated to be completed by March 23.

Although the road construction is 48 days behind schedule, she explained that the contractor had promised to avail the both carriage ways by the initial due date.

She said the contractor had not requested any extension of date of completion other than the agreed date of April 5.

Among the works, which are said to be behind is the paving of the road, installation of street lights and other works.

Ms Mokote-Tshabaesele said much of the delay, which now renders the road to be at 79 per cent complete against the anticipated 88 per cent, was caused by relocation of services.

The department of roads official said services such as water pipes and electricity line were not relocated immediately at the start of the project, hence the delays.

She said the access road to Mokolodi kgotla, which formed the initial part of the project design, would not be constructed due to legal predicaments.

However, she said a bus rank at Boatle would be constructed and added that although it was not in the initial designs, it became evident that the road design had isolated the Boatle business community.

The South East District councillors had requested to be briefed on the progress of the road. ENDS
