Church essential law enforcement partner - police

05 Mar 2019

The church has been urged to play a more visible role in national crime prevention initiatives as it had the responsibility for mobilising communities against social ills such as murder, abuse and violence.
Botswana Police Service deputy commissioner Mr David Mosetse told a synod of the Dutch Reformed Church in Botswana (DRCB) in Mochudi recently that the church was an essential partner in law enforcement because of preaching the good news and promoting peace and tranquility.
He thanked the church for its continued support and participation in community projects and cooperation with the law and requested it to continue preaching peace for spiritual and moral support.
Addressing himself to the assembly’s theme; Unity is Power, Mr Mosetse said it was not surprising that the church, like many other organisations worldwide, struggled with challenges of developing unity as it was made up of people who experienced different kinds of conflict on a daily basis.
The only thing setting faith-based organisations apart is not how much they disagreed or had conflicts, but rather the resolution of their differences according to Christian standards, he said.
Mr Mosetse implored church leaders and elders to remain united even under conflicts caused by some anti-social elements bent on corrupting the church.
He said leaders should resolve conflicts in a peaceful atmosphere bearing in mind that their followers looked to them to lead by example.
He pleaded with the church to avoid divisions and be united in mind and thought.
Reverend Sekate Sekate of DRCB said the synod was meant to promote unity among congregants as well as to provide a platform for the sharing of ideas for the betterment of the church.
Rev. Sekate said the assembly was also a way of avoiding the formation of factions in the church. Congregants, he said, should know that they needed one another other and desist from competing and being jealous which contributed to social ills in communities.
He said unity among congregants and leaders would help put an end to the gruesome deaths and accidents taking place in Botswana.
Rev. Sekate advised the church to seek the face of God all the time, especially during tough times so that He could guide them to better solutions. ENDS
