SEDC land fill compactor expected May
05 Mar 2019
The South East District land fill is expected to return to normalcy upon the acquisition of a new compactor in May.
The land fill has for some time been emitting smoke, a sign something was burning.
South East District Council chairperson, Mr Phenyo Segokgo stated during a full council meeting on Monday that the land fill had been operating without a compactor for more than a year.
He said the old machine had mechanical faults and needed to be replaced. “This led to an unsightly situation in and around the land fill and its adjoining environs,” Mr Segokgo stated. He said the council had been managing the situation through the hiring of bulldozers from the private sector and relying on other districts for assistance.
However, Mr Segokgo was elated to inform the council that the procurement process to acquire a compactor was complete, and that the situation at the land fill would be restored.
On other land issues, he regretted that the council was experiencing unwillingness by some members of the public to pay for solid waste collection. He said some companies were also failing to adhere to solid waste collection schedule, adding that the council was intending to mobilise awareness campaigns.
Regarding land management, he said the long awaited final development plan for Tlokweng had been submitted to the Ministry of Land Management, Water and Sanitation Services for approval. He said the plan would be a regulatory spatial framework for developments of Tlokweng.
Mr Segokgo encouraged councillors to focus on the review of the Ramotswa planning area development plan by devising ways to source money for the project. ends
