04 Mar 2019
The waste management buy back project being piloted in some wards by the Maun Administration Authority (MAA) will be rolled out in the 2019/20 financial year.
MAA chairman, Mr Mmoedi Modiegi, said the latest pilot project was carried out at Matlapana and Matsaudi wards.
Mr Modiegi, who was speaking at the MAA council meeting, said the council intended to roll out the project to the rest of the community.
The waste management buy back project aimed at improving cleanliness through community involvement. Members of the community collected and sorted waste.
The council collected the waste after paying residents who participated.
Mr Modiegi also notified councillors about 49 youth who were funded through the Youth Development Fund (YDF) .
He pointed out that successful beneficiaries were funded to the tune of P5 million and underwent training on basic business management to equip them with entrepreneurial skills.
Presenting the District Development Committee (DDC) report, Mr Joel Leburu, said a total of 306 projects had been funded through YDF across the sub-district from 2010 to date.
Mr Leburu said 300 projects were operational while six had collapsed.
He said the operational projects had created employment opportunities and also noted that P17 900 of revenue was collected from loans owned by YDF beneficiaries in the last quarter thereby bringing total collected since inception to P67 299.75.
In addition, he cited as a challenge failure by some YDF beneficiaries to service their loans.
Mr Leburu also said some businesses experienced challenges of lack of markets and operational spaces, adding that the council helped through holding market days for the business owners to be visible.
He said the waste management buy back initiative was conducted in a total of five wards being Thito, Shashe, Bombadi, Matlapana and Matsaudi.
Mr Leburu said an overall of 729 participants had benefited from the initiative to the amount of P840 000. He said the project faced challenges of transport as it had not been awarded. ENDS
