VP calls for increased literacy levels on IT

28 Feb 2019

Vice President, Mr Slumber Tsogwane has called for improved Information Technology literacy at early stages of education.

Speaking during a donation ceremony of four computers and monitors, a laptop, multi-functional printer, WiFi and network cabling for internet connection to Nicodemus Primary School by Water Utilities Corporation (WUC), the Vice President stated that information technology had found its way into the learning and teaching environment, hence the need for improved literacy levels on the use of IT.

Computer literacy, he said, would soon be a pre-requisite for employment and the new generation must be readied for that.

Mr Tsogwane said improvement of academic performance could optimally be achieved if teachers, parents and the community joined hands.

Tsienyane and Etsile primary schools as well as Rakops JSS also received a laptop each.

Mr Tsogwane said the corporation was equally disturbed by the poor academic performance at Xere Primary School and assisted them with a laptop, monitor and two printers.

WUC human resource director, Mr Macheng Macheng said his company was concerned with under utilised IT equipment due to lack of internet connectivity in schools.

He stated that mutual agreement between WUC and the recipients was that following donations, schools must ensure internet connectivity by subscribing and or buying data bundles.

Mr Macheng said schools must ensure maximum utilisation to   realise the intended purpose.

Education, he said, remained key in the community upliftment endeavours as outlined in WUC Corporate Social Responsibility.

He noted that Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) results indicated that there was room for improvement in almost all the primary schools in Rakops.

Tsienyane Primary School attained 80.9 per cent, Nicodemus 69.2, Etsile 48.8 and Xere 42.1 per cent.

Nicodemus Primary School head, Ms Tjiunae Kazombungo said the donation would significantly improve teaching and learning for thousands who would study at the school.

Ms Kazombungo said the computers would enhance learners’ access to information and assist teachers in their work.

Teachers, she said, would also find the computers valuable tools to prepare highly effective and quality teaching lessons and notes. ENDS
