Kgalagadi District Council chairperson, Mr Meleko Thumpe, handed over a house to a destitute person in Kokotsha on February 26.
Villagers came in numbers to appreciate efforts by the Kokotsha Village Development Committee (VDC).
The committee built a one bed roomed house for the beneficiary through assistance of the Kokotsha business community, area councillor and the community.
Councillor Thumpe applauded the VDC for mobilising the community.
He said he was unveiling a 30th house, which was built in the village under the destitute housing programme.
He encouraged the villagers to take poverty head on, exercise independence and take up government programmes and policies.
Therefore, he called on the community to respond swiftly when government empowered them and be productive at all times.
Mr Thumpe also applauded the business community for donating towards completion of the house and encouraged them to continue building more houses in the village.
“Blessed is the hand that gives,” he said.
For her part, a social worker based in Kokotsha, Ms Tiroyaone Gare, also appreciated all those who contributed towards completion of the house which, she said, had transformed the life of Mr Emmanuel Motshetsheme.
She said the house was built through the spirit of volunteerism, and caring for one another which she noted must be continued.
She supported Councillor Thumpe’s words that all those who contributed to the building of the house had demonstrated to be moral, tolerant and inclusive since they contributed to provision of social inclusion opportunities for the needy and vulnerable.
The VDC vice chairperson, Ms Mpelegang Mphuthele, said the house was built to the tune of P12 600 and other non-monetary volunteers in the village.
She applauded Houmoed Kokotsha Horse Race Club for injecting P6 500 which was start-up capital after which they sought more sponsors from the village to ensure that the house was completed and furnished with basic necessities. ends
