Supplementary registration numbers not satisfactory
27 Feb 2019
Francistown mayor, Ms Sylvia Muzila says the 1 450 people who have registered during the ongoing supplementary registration exercise by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is not satisfactory.
She said this during the second full council meeting on February 25.
She said looking at the population that was eligible to vote, the existing state of affairs was a cause for alarm.
“You will recall that at the end of the first registration, a total of 24 568 people had registered for this year’s general elections in the three Francistown constituencies,” she said.
The mayor called on fellow councillors to encourage the electorate to register in large numbers to avoid rushing at the eleventh hour.
On education, Ms Muzila was happy that Francistown continued to do well.
She cited Mater Spei College and Francistown Senior Secondary School which attained positions two and 11 respectively during the recently released BGCSE results.
Ms Muzila also commended Setlalekgosi Junior Secondary School and Montsamaisa Junior Secondary School who garnered 72.78 per cent and 63.27 per cent pass rate in the junior secondary schools category.
“Likewise, the Primary School Leaving Examinations Results (PSLE) were also very pleasing,” she said, showering all stakeholders with praises for their contribution towards improved results.
On sport, Ms Muzila stated the city needed to put extra effort to improve its fortunes.
She conceded that the city of Francistown was not doing well particularly in football.
One of the things that needed to be done, according to the mayor, was to first improve available sport facilities among them the council stadium.
The development, she stated, would attract many people to the stadiums. ENDS
