Boteti sub-council battles with financial challenges

25 Feb 2019

Boteti Sub-council chairperson, Mr Molemi Galeragwe says the sub-council was financially challenged as commitments far outstrip revenue collection.

Giving the chairperson’s speech recently, Mr Galeragwe said it was vital for the sub-council to dedicate its efforts to revenue collection management, enhancement and protection.

Boteti sub-council, he said, needed to implement tighter expenditure controls in order to stay afloat.

He noted that out of the P5 299 070 that they had budgeted to collect as part of the sub-council’s source of income, only P2 637 510 had been collected.

He said the budget ceiling for 2019/2020 had been cut by one per cent from P115 476 330 to P115 970 370, which he said would negatively impact the sub-council’s capacity to deliver services to communities.

In addition, Mr Galeragwe stated that the Thalamabele-Mosu road would be upgraded to bitumen standard and the tender had been awarded to Landmark Projects to the tune of P239 101 022.36.

He further indicated that a total of eight tenders were awaiting adjudication at the ministerial tender committee.

Projects, he said included dry grading and spot improvement of 33 kilometres Mmashoro-Mokubilo/Mmea road, dry grading of 41 kilometres Mmatshumo-Mosu road, resealing and marking of 100 kilometres Orapa East gate-Mokubilo, re-gravelling of Rakops-Xere, and re-sealing as well as road marking of 40 kilometres Makoba-Letlhakane road.

Councillor Baobonye Loeto condemned Water Utilities Corporation for failing to expand the water network, adding that it was crucial to increase Letlhakane internal roads.

He cited a significant increase in the number of cars in the village surrounded by mines.

Councillor Batoli Manyuni stated that malaria cases had dropped, but noted there was still shortage of mosquito nets in Rakops.

Ms Manyuni expressed concern at the state of the dumping site in Rakops, which she said was in a bad condition.

However, she praised the Self Help Housing Agency (SHAA), saying it had developed many households.

Specially elected councillor, Mr Geoffrey Nsiiwa complained about the frequent power outages in Boteti, especially on rainy days, which he said led to criminals attacking pupils at Rakops Junior Secondary School.

Mr Nsiiwa also wanted to know how a Khumaga resident, who was attacked by an elephant, was assisted. ENDS
