Sub-district records large beneficiary turnover

25 Feb 2019

Letlhakeng Sub-district has experienced a large turnover of beneficiaries at the beginning of October 2018 who came to renew their smart switch cards.

Addressing the sub-district council session recently, the sub-council chairperson, Mr Thomas Batlhophi said the sub-district provided safety nets to 3 871 beneficiaries comprising 1 680 destitute persons, 1 421 needy students, 745 orphans, 27 children in need of care as well as four community-based care clients.

He said the department provided private clothes for orphans during the month of December 2018 while those under five years were given clothes worth P1 200 and those with age range from  six to 12 were provided with clothes worth P1 400 while 13-18 years were given clothes worth P1 700.

He said under the destitute and RADP housing projects the 2017/18 programme had 38 out of 52 houses complete.

“Contractors and artisans are on-site to complete the outstanding 14 houses at Sorilatholo, Dutlwe, Takatokwane and Diphuduhudu,” he said.

Councillor Batlhophi said the 2018/19 programme was ongoing and all the 51 houses had begun with progress ranging from five to 55 per cent.

He further said the poverty eradication programme was going well and a total of 21 poverty eradication pot hire projects had now been fully funded.

He said other projects, which were newly funded, included 20 fashion design projects while procurement of 14 welding projects, two catering and one fashion design project was ongoing.

He said a total of 543 beneficiaries had been given projects since the inception of Poverty Eradication Programme and only 23 projects, which were operated by 35 beneficiaries were successful.

In addition, he said community constituency projects were ongoing and so far 10 out of 39 were complete while five remained un-started at Kaudwane, Tsetseng, Takatokwane, Sorilatholo and Khenyenye, but had been awarded and were scheduled to commence soon.

Mr Batlhophi further said the 2018/19 programme had also started with 22 out of 39 projects already awarded and awaiting commencements at sites.

Mr Batlhophi added that the implementation for the said projects had been moving at a  snail pace coupled with poor monitoring and this could be attributed to shortage of vehicles. ENDS
