Member of Parliament for Tlokweng, Mr Masego Segokgo has expressed optimism that the ongoing campaign between his office and Eyelight Optometrists is bearing desirable results.
Tlokweng parliamentary constituency office and Eyelight Optometrists have partnered to offer free eye testing to elders as well as give free reading spectacles to deserving elders, while other cases are referred to specialists.
In an interview on the sidelines of a doctoring session for elders in Tlokweng on February 14, Mr Segokgo said elders tended to lose sight as they grow older, hence the need for them to be aided.
“As a result of poor sight, many are not able to read and write, which takes away an important aspect of their lives,” he said.
Mr Segokgo said the session, which was the second, had identified the need to help the elders, adding that they had already donated over 400 spectacles.
He stated that initially, the target was to reach out to 500 elders, but they have had to review the target after considering the public interest and the severity of the situation.
“Some of the cases of poor sight are referred to specialists for further consultations,” said the Tlokweng legislator.
He stated that apart from offering free eye examination, the elders were also examined for blood pressure and sugar diabetes.
Mr Segokgo emphasised the need for the community to care for its elders, whom he described as a heritage.
The Tlokweng Member of Parliament said his office would continue to facilitate for more sessions, where more spectacles would be donated and some test for other illnesses be conducted.
The MP appreciated Eyelight Optometrists and Tlokweng Main Clinic for taking part in bringing health services closer to the community. Ends
