19 Feb 2019

The South-East South Sub-district has noted with concern illegal smuggling of goods between Ramotswa and South Africa.

The sub-district council chairperson, Mr Adolf Mosalaesi, said during the sub-council session recently that the smuggled goods included tobacco and marijuana.

He stated that the perpetrators took advantage of the Ramotswa proximity to the borderline, adding that the situation was not helped by the dilapidated border fence.

Mr Mosalaesi also regretted the number of youth involvement in crime, adding that the police recorded several cases of possession of drugs involving youth.

“The most common drug being marijuana, where most of them were selling it in tuck shops, car washes and at the bus rank,” he said.

He stated that some youth were involved in cases of robbery where they targeted electronics such as laptops and cell phones.

Furthermore, Mr Mosalaesi said the Ramotswa police had recorded a significant decrease in road traffic accidents, during the year 2018 as compared to 2017.

He said about eight fatal road accidents were recorded in 2017, while in 2018 seven were recorded

The sub-council chairperson also stated that sub-district still continued to fight social ills in the community through the office of social and community development.

“These cases are still on the rise owing to family dysfunction and lack of societal morals. We still continue to use workshops and outreach activities to reach out to the public,” he stated.

He said this quarter the sub-district, through the department of social and community development, had planned workshops to try and strengthen the out of school youth, survivors of gender violence as well as caregivers to beneficiaries being assisted by the sub-district.

On other issues, he made an appeal to parents to keep an eye on their children’s movement to avoid cases of human trafficking.

Also, appealed to the general public come forth and register for foster parenting.

“Please be reminded that this is for the good of our community as the programme has the potential to give children in need of protection a fighting chance to be something in life. So far only one lady has registered,” he said.  Ends
