Swimming team gets boost

Botswana Swimming Sports Association (BSSA) has received a boost ahead of the annual Zone IV championships to be held this week in Namibia.Stanbic Bank Botswana has once again showed support for sport development by donating swimming gear valued at P25 000.

The head of corporate and investment banking, Shepherd Aisam said the bank recognised the role that sport played in bringing people together.

“Supporting the BSSA is our way of encouraging more youth to look to sports as a possible career path, which inadvertently will help in curbing youth unemployment and positioning Botswana as a worthy competitor on the international scale,” he said.

Aisam said the sponsorship was aligned with the support of the sports industry, adding that they were confident that the team would return with medals.

Team manager, Kgaotsang Matthews revealed that the team was selected based on the best performance per age group.

Furthermore, Matthews said the Namibian games would serve as qualifiers to the world championships which would be held in China later this year.

She said with proper training that the athletes had gone through in preparation for the games, they expected to bag at least 12 medals.

Last year, Team Botswana was among the top five from the Zone IV championships, and the expectation is that they improve their position.

The swimming body has entrusted 20 local swimmers to lift the country’s flag high under the guidance of coach, Craig Rouse. ENDS
