The introduction of reception classes in some government schools has been applauded as it prepares young children for school. 

Speaking in an interview with BOPA, deputy school head of Tloaneng Primary School, Ms Elizabeth Montsheng applauded government for coming up with such a productive programme, saying it prepares young children aged four and half years for primary school. 

She said pupils, who have passed through reception classes, are mentally ready to start Standard 1 as they would be used to the school environment. 

Ms Montsheng however, revealed that the first day of school is not always easy for children as some cry and do not participate in class discussions but as time goes on they get used to the school environment and adapt to the learning process. 

Furthermore, she said adaptation to the school environment builds their self-esteem, confidence and their capability to be socialise with others and make friends. 

 She noted that enrolment for last year stood at 40 as compared to 29 pupils this year. 

Ms Montsheng said although the reception class is a good initiative by government, they are faced with challenges such as shortage of classrooms and they are currently using a corner in their multipurpose hall. 

She further revealed that existing toilets are too big for children and are thus very risky. 

For her part, assistant teacher for reception classes, Ms Gaamangwe Monamodi said even though pupils are coping well with the school environment, it is not always an easy task to teach reception classes, therefore it requires patience and commitment. 

She said it necessitates her to build a strong relationship with them and offer them parental support, care and love fairly so that they feel welcome. 

 She noted that she is optimistic that they would continue to offer the best reception classes.

She said Tloaneng Primary continues to excel in PSLE results, adding that through team work, commitment and cooperation they are able to deliver on their mandate. ENDS
