Kgotla foundation of traditional democracy
14 Feb 2019
The kgotla system has been described as foundation of traditional democracy in Botswana, hence the need to equip it with necessary resources.
The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso, said this during the handover of 20 chairs to Mabodisa kgotla and 30 blankets to elders.
She said the ministry’s mandate included giviung priority to tribal administration so as to elevate dikgotla to a status commensurate with their responsibilities.
Ms Tshireletso said if equipped with resources, the kgotla would go a long way in building the nation.
She urged the Village Development Committee (VDC) to continue with the spirit of volunteerism and to ensure that resources were used accordingly.
Ms Tshireletso also handed the VDC P6 000 from the Bangladesh Association in Botswana.
She thanked the association for the donation and urged them to continue with the good gesture.
She said there would be a thorough assessment to ensure that donations went to deserving people.
Ms Tshireletso urged other organisations, individuals and cooperatives to pull together towards responding to the needs of the less privileged in society.
She said it was the nation’s responsibility to realise Vision 2036 by giving to those in need.
Chairperson of Bangladesh Association in Botswana, Mr Tariquil Islam, expressed hope that the gifts would go a long way in helping the community.
Member of Parliament for Mochudi West, Mr Gilbert Mangole, encouraged the VDC to take care of the chairs and hand over blankets to the rightful beneficiaries.
He said the leadership and communities across the Kgatleng District had agreed to prioritise the paving of internal roads and storm water drainage infrastructure through the constituency development fund.
The VDC chairperson, Ms Okhola Masiele, thanked the minister and the donors for the gesture.
She said the donation came as an encouragement for the VDC to keep striving for community development. ends
