GU clashes with Prisons

12 Feb 2019

Fresh from advancing to the Mascom Top 8 final on Saturday night, Gaborone United (GU) returns to action at 7 pm today in a BTC Premiership encounter against Prisons XI at Lobatse Sports Complex.

GU will be in confident mood after beating their arch-rivals Township Rollers and nemesis Orapa United with identical 3-1 scores in their last two matches.

The understanding seems to be growing between GU attacking midfielders Thatayaone Kgamanyane, Obonwe Maome, Dirang Moloi, Rentse Keakabetse and striker Patrick Kabamba.

If they could continue where they left off in their victory over Rollers, then the Prisons XI defence would need to be at their best to stop the ‘Reds’ from claiming victory.

Maome and Moloi, in particular, are in great form at the moment, and the men driving the Reds forward.

The diminutive Maome has scored in each of the last two matches and is the current GU leading goal scorer with nine league and cup goals.

GU will be aiming to collect maximum points to continue their push for a top eight finish.

Prisons are however no walkover. Though they have tasted defeat in their past two matches, against Mochudi Centre Chiefs and Jwaneng Galaxy, the ‘Warders’ are a much improved team since roping in former UB Hawks coach, Sepheko Motlhagodi as their new mentor.

In their recent matches, the ‘Warders’ have collected victories against tough teams like Orapa United and BDF XI, which shows that they have what it takes to cause an upset today.

Youthful striker, Kitso Mpuisang has been banging in goals and the GU defence would need to watch him closely.

Prisons would be aiming to win the match in order to increase their chances of surviving relegation.

They are on position 13 and one point away from the relegation zone.

The first round encounter between the two teams ended with GU demolishing Prisons 3-0 through Maome, Mandla Mgadla and Tshepo Maikano goals.

In another league encounter today, Notwane welcome BDF XI at Molepolole Sports Complex at 7pm. The first round encounter between the two teams ended in a 2-0 victory for BDF XI. Matebele’s goals were scored by Kennedy Taukobong and Moatlhodi Ralesota. ENDS
