Bowling association pleads for sponsors
11 Feb 2019
President of Botswana Bowling Association (BBA), Kitso Robert says they are in dire need of sponsors for the World Bowls Champs of Champs 2020 qualifiers to be held in Wales from May 10-23.
In an interview, Robert said though Botswana National Sport Commission is supposed to be the main sponsor, it did not sponsor the association for the qualifiers.
Already, he said they had approached a number of companies such as NTT Nissan and were still to get feedback from Debswana.
Also, he said bowlers were seeking sponsorship in their personal capacity.
Robert said the team comprising of five males and three females would represent Botswana at the qualifiers.
He indicated that there were few females in the team since the players had to each sponsor themselves with P25 000.
This, he said proved to be a limiting factor for most female bowlers.
He said the World Bowls Champs of Champs tournament was important for Botswana as African countries had to go through qualifications to feature in the Champs of Champs.
Robert said Botswana had featured in the qualifiers before and had played against England, Australia, Malaysia and New Zealand.
He said the male team would play 4s and single matches while females will play trips and pairs.
This, Robert said had been made easy by the fact that in bowling one could qualify by category, which the association had found to be an advantage for the small teams.
Meanwhile, the association held the first Rose Bowl tournament in Gaborone over the weekend, which will be held in other parts of the country. ENDS
