Government provides housing for judges

10 Feb 2019

Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Shaw Kgathi says it is inaccurate to say judges of the High Court have no accommodation on account of budget provision of housing.

Responding to a question in Parliament recently, Mr Kgathi said there were institutional houses or government pool houses provided for the judges.

Mr Kgathi pointed out that where there was a shortage; alternative accommodation had been provided through rental from the private market or through payment of housing allowance for those judges who elect to stay in their own houses.

Meanwhile Minister Kgathi confirmed that all transport challenges that existed would be resolved through the procurement of vehicles in a phased manner in the coming financial year.

Member of Parliament for Lobatse, Advocate Sadique Kebonang had asked the minister if he was aware that some judges of the High Court had no accommodation provided on the basis that there was no budget for provision of housing.

Advocate Kebonang wanted to know if the minister was also aware that there was lack of official vehicles for judges, adding that where they were available, the vehicles were over 10 years old.

Furthermore, he asked how government would resolve such issues. ENDS
