Fire prevention tips in the workplace can help keep the workplace safe and prevent financial losses.
No matter the type of business, fire safety should always be a priority.
This was stated by Central District Council (CDC) fire department officer, Mr Moagi Gareebine, during a two-day workshop for staff of the departments of information, broadcasting and printing in Serowe.
The workshop was meant to equip employees with fire safety and first aid skills.
Mr Gareebine said every workplace had its own fire risks but there were basic tips that everyone should follow to maintain safety in the workplace.
"Fire destroys property, causes injuries and takes lives, therefore one of the key strategies to maintaining a safe workplace and preventing fires is fire safety training. With proper training, workers can eliminate fire hazards and respond quickly and efficiently if fire breaks out," he said.
He noted that fire risk assessment helped identify that which needed to be done, to prevent fire and keep employees safe.
Mr Gareebine emphasised the importance of fire drills to improve response.
All workplaces with 15 or more employees, he said , should have a fire marshal responsible for among other duties, fire equipment inventory and maintenance, designing emergency evacuation plan and ensuring evacuation procedures were practiced thoroughly and regularly.
A participant, Ms Lucretia Chima appealed to participants to use the knowledge to save lives and government property. ENDS
