20 Jan 2019
Member of Parliament for Selebi Phikwe Mr Nonofo Molefhi commended schools in Selebi Phikwe for good performance.
Addressing Village Development Committees (VDC) in his constituency recently, Mr Molefhi applauded the good performance that Selebi Phikwe schools continued to show over the years, saying that it is a good thing for the town to maintain the outstanding performance.
He urged parents to continue giving their children support and ensuring that they perform to the best of their abilities.
Mr Molefhi said unity between parents, teachers and children would take the mining town to greater heights.
On other issues, Mr Molefhi urged VDCs to monitor projects undertaken in their respective areas, particularly projects financed by the constituency fund.
He said Selebi Phikwe East constituency should use the P10m allocated for constituency developmentto undertake projects that were agreed upon.
Mr Molefhi said the funds should be managed by both the council and the VDC.
He also urged them to ensure that the market stalls were put back into good shape so that residents could rent them.
In addition, he urged them to come up with initiatives to generate income and create employment for the people of Selebi Phikwe, adding that there was a 20 hectare of land reserved for them.
The minister said it was high time that the piece of land was developed to sustain the people in the area.
He said the P10m could be used for that purpose.
The Umbrella Ward Development Committee chairperson Mr Mmopiemang Basebi raised concern over the mass movement of people who left Selebi Phikwe for greener pastures.
He said the BCL Mine closure had seriously affected the local economy, calling for the government to extend the accommodation period for former BCL mine employees who had not yet vacated the houses.
Mr Basebi also thanked the MP for making time to come and address them on issues affecting his constituents.
Mr Molefhi promised to give them feedback once cabinet had made a decision regarding former employees of BCL Mine who still occupied the mine houses. ENDS
