MP promotes rain water harvest
16 Jan 2019
Shoshong Member of Parliament, Mr Dikgang Makgalemele, has appealed to communities in his constituency to find strategies to harvest rain water.
Speaking during kgotla meetings in his constituency, Mr Makgalemele said rain water could augment supply from underground sources.
Even though faced with water shortage, Mr Makgalemele decried that constituents were doing little to harvest rain water.
The legislator further said underground sources, which were the only source of water for almost all the villages in his constituency, had proved to be insufficient due to low volumes and high salinity.
Mr Makgalemele said even though Botswana was semi-arid and therefore receiving limited rainfall, the few drops received during the rainy season were enough to augment water supply.
Water tanks and small ponds would go a long way in supplementing the supply from underground sources, he said.
Mr Makgalemele said it was unfortunate that people often went for days without water when the boreholes breakdown, saying if harvested, rainwater could help during difficult times. Ends
