Olopeng implores youth to register for elections

15 Jan 2019

Member of Parliament for Tonota, Mr Thapelo Olopeng, has encouraged eligible voters to take advantage of the on-going constituency-based supplementary registration to register for the general elections.

The supplementary voter registration started in December 17, 2018 and will end March 31.

Addressing a kgotla meeting in ShasheMooke recently, Mr Olopeng implored the youth to take lead and register in large numbers.

He said democracy was strengthened by participation in the election process and appealed to stakeholders to encourage eligible citizens to ensure that they register now so as to avoid missing out on an opportunity to vote.

On other issues, Mr Olopeng who is also the Minister of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology, told residents that government was incapacitated to build a new primary school in the village because of lack of funds.

This was after the VDC chairperson Mr Kenalemang Nono, stated that the village needed a second primary school because pupils travelled long distance to the old school.

Mr Olopeng also informed the residents that the Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) would connect a water pipe from Gerald Estate to supply them.

WUC had been bowsing water to the village but the demand for water was so high that the village could go up to two days without drinking water.

He said the project was at tendering stage and that a contractor would soon be engaged to start the project and that lack of drinking water in the village would be a thing of the past.

On one hand, the MP said the leadership had agreed to use part of the P10 million constituency fund to drill a borehole for the village which would augment the supply of water in the village.

In his welcome remarks, Kgosi David Adam of ShasheMooke complained about the acute shortage of water in the village.

He said the village could go for days without drinking water and appealed to the government to do something to alleviate the problem.

Kgosi Adam also thanked government for appointing three herdsmen of arbitration of which all are women. Ends
