Support group advocates for healthy relationships

13 Jan 2019

In an effort to curb escalating divorce rate, a married couple of social workers has established a marriage support group in Semotswane to promote healthy relationships in the community.

Mr Doctor Makabe and his wife, Nomsa told BOPA in an interview that they were moved by the high rates of divorce and other challenges caused by unhealthy relationships like passion killings.

Consequently, they saw it fit to initiate the little change they may through Crystal Clear marriage support group.

Crystal Clear is aimed at helping to strengthen marriages through provision of education to married couples and those on the verge of getting married.

He said from their previous sessions with couples, relationships’ greatest problem is lack of effective communication.

He said their sessions focused on strengthening the bond between married couples and those intending to marry, including interested singles.

For her part, Ms Makabe said the journey has been blissful regarding attracting couples, but running an NGO is not easy.

She said people appreciate the education as it opens their eyes, most importantly on their differences as couples and how to solve them without conflict.

Ms Makabe said they had a challenge since they did not have proper premises to host the sessions, revealing however that one couple afforded the use of a hall for free.

She said the support group was an important development and a much needed one in any community, therefore needs support to achieve its set objectives.

Ms Makabe said the importance of marriage support groups can never be over emphasised as they bring stability to the community. ENDS
