05 Dec 2018

Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Kgotla Autlwetse has told Parliament that Matebeleng Primary School was among 13 out of 36 primary schools in the Kgatleng District that have small administration blocks.

Responding to a question, Mr Autlwetse explained that the situation was because since NDP 9, concentration had been to address backlog eradication in primary schools by constructing teachers’ quarters, toilets and classrooms.

Mr Autlwetse also acknowledged shortage of classrooms at Oodi Primary School as there were 25 classes, out of which 21 had classrooms while four were taught outside.

He said funds permitting, the staff rooms in the 13 schools would be expanded in the future.

He said classrooms and teachers’ houses had been earmarked for construction under the Education Backlog Eradication Programme.

Gaborone North MP, Mr Haskins Nkaigwa had asked the minister if he was aware that administration block at Matebeleng Primary School could not accommodate all the teaching staff as it was small.

He also wanted to know if the minister was aware that there was classroom shortage at Oodi Primary School and how the ministry intended to address the situation. Ends
