Botswana Tertiary Students Sports Association (BOTESSA) in partnership with First National Bank Botswana (FNBB) has launched the FNB BOTTESA Marathon with the first race to be held next year.
North West district commissioner Keolopile Leipego said during the 10km walk on Saturday that the FNB BOTESSA Marathon 2019 aimed to address social ills affecting students and youth in general such as alcohol and drug abuse.
Leipego appreciated both FNBB and BOTESSA for their role in sports development in the country as seen by many of their sport activities.
He said sports contributed to fitness and a healthy lifestyle and had proven to be a well-established career globally.
“Athletes and aspiring athletes should be motivated to work hard,” he said.
BOTESSA acting president, Keorapetse Setlhare said the turn up for the 10km walk, which was the groundbreaking ceremony for the marathon was a success.
The marathon, which is expected to attract people from across the country, will benefit the Maun residents and the business community as well as assist in talent development.
FNBB director of marketing, Obonye Malope said the FNB BOTESSA marathon was part of the initiatives in sport development with BOTESSA for which FNBB pledged P1 million in a period of three years. Among the athletes, who are expected to compete in the 42.5km marathon are Leungo Scotch, Ruri Rammokolodi and Galefele Moroko, who attended the marathon launch. BOPA
