Batawana Regent, Kgosi Kealetile Moremi on Novembe 19 received the Region 5 Youth Games Gaborone 2018 torch at the Maun main kgotla
The torch, which signifies unity amongst Batswana, has so far passed through Lobatse, Kanye and Ghanzi.Speaking at the ceremony, North West District assistant commissioner, Ramogaupi Gaborekwe urged Maun residents to support Team Botswana which was made up of former Maun Senior Secondary School sprinter, Refilwe Murangi.
Gaborekwe noted that the North West District prided itself with producing sports icons in the likes of Glody Dube and Amantle Montsho.
Murangi said in an interview that she would do her best during the games which would commence on December 7 in Gaborone.
She said her experience of competing internationally would come handy, adding that she had also competed in regional games that were hosted by Angola
in 2016 where she managed to win two silver medals as well as two bronze medals in both 100 and 200 metre races.
Murangi said she also competed at the Commonwealth Games in Samoa in 2015 where she finished on position four.
For his part, Region 5 Youth Games general manager, Steve Botlhasitse noted that the roving torch was a symbol of unity which aimed to build excitement in all Batswana.He encouraged young people in North West District to be motivated by Murangi’s perseverance, adding that sport had proven to be the future as a well-paying career .
The games have attracted 10 countries and Tanzania has been invited as a guest. However, they would only bring their men’s football team. The games will feature athletics, basket ball, boxing, netball, judo, swimming, tennis, volleyball and one para sport in athletics. ENDS
