President trips cost over P600 000

Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration Mr Nonofo Molefhi has told Parliament that the total cost incurred in the   recent official Africa tours that include Zambia, Seychelles and Malawi by the President was P603 529.10.

Mr Molefhi said the cost included per diem, fuel, airport charges and air tickets costs for the President and his entourage, adding that there were no specific costs incurred by the government on the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) secretary general.

He explained that the BDP secretary general accompanied the President in his capacity as a guest to the President and the government did not incur any expenses in the trips by the BDP secretary general.

MP for Gaborone North Mr Haskins Nkaigwa had asked the minister to state the total expenditure for the recent official Africa tour by the President in which he was accompanied by the BDP secretary general and to explain in which capacity the BDP secretary general accompanied the President.

He also wanted to know how much his total expenditure was for the trips undertaken. Mr Nkaigwa further wanted the minister to state whether it is the Government or BDP who incurs the expenditure for such trips and if so why. ENDS
