Look beyond internship programme

19 Nov 2018

Intern officers at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing Development have been urged to look beyond the internship programme and come up with innovative business ideas that could bridge gaps in the business market.

Officiating at the life skills seminar for outgoing interns under the ministry at Mahalapye, public relations officer, Mr Christopher Nyanga said such innovative ideas would, among others, bring solutions to the current arising challenges in the business industry.

Mr Nyanga added that unemployment was a global challenge and therefore upon finishing their term as interns, the graduates would be joining other unemployed youths in the society.

Mr Nyanga noted that regardless of the sad reality, interns must not be deterred, but rather stay focused and believe in making positive changes.

He said small and medium businesses in the informal market were among the potential areas of growth to tap into.

“Be creative and look up for opportunities to tap into,” he said.

Mr Nyanga said the use of information technology had taken an upper hand in the day to day life and therefore challenged young and innovative graduates to develop business ideas in that field.

He also applauded the interns for their hard work and being instrumental in timely and quality service delivery. “Without any doubt, your contribution to the ministry was notable,” he said.

He further advised graduating interns to continue with their studies in order to boost their knowledge.

Mr Nyanga said the internship programme must be used as an eye opener to help one venture into other areas where there are possibilities of growth.

“Some of you are qualified in fields that were already congested in the employment market, offering limited changes for success.

Therefore it will be advisable to consider opening up your scope of knowledge by acquiring another qualification in a different field,” he said.

He said ‘by so doing, a graduate will be in a better position to match the skills required in the global employment market.’ ENDS
