Ghanzi District Council vice chairperson, Shadrack Modisane has cautioned against the use of performance enhancing drugs during the upcoming Region 5 Youth Games scheduled for December 7 to 16 in Gaborone.

Modisane described doping as a sport growth impediment, which should not be tolerated, citing how three doping cases denied some Botswana athletes the chance to shine during prestigious platforms in recent past.

Addressing community members who had gathered at Ghanzi kgotla on Friday to witness the Region 5 youth games roving torch to unite Batswana and encourage them to rally behind their youth team.

Modisane wished the youth team all the best and stated that hosting the youth games should be a motivation on its own.

Hosting games is a boost to business, particularly lodging business, he added.

On other issues, Modisane suggested that athletes who lost their lives while on duty should be recognised just like soldiers who died protecting their country.

Concerning scouting of athletes, he said it should be done in all areas around the country, saying some talents went to waste unnoticed.

He was happy that the roving torch was administered by youth.

The leader of the roving torch crew, Game Mothibi pleaded for local viewership during the youth games, and appealed to Batswana to unite and pray for team Botswana to do well during the youth games.

For his part, Kgosi Botshelo Lekgothu of Ghanzi was also happy that the youth were taking part in the build up to the youth games, particularly the roving torch crew and thanked them to have passed through Ghanzi Township. ENDS
