17 Oct 2018

Kgosi Mosadi Seboko of Balete on October 16 hosted the first ever South-east Sub-region excellence awards in recognition of excelling students.

The event, sponsored by Bolux Milling Company under the theme, Stakeholders’ partnership, key to success, saw best-performing students presented with cash prizes, bags, books and stationery.

In her address, Kgosi Seboko encouraged the students to take agriculture seriously as it had unending employment opportunities.

“We should not be importing fruits and vegetables from neighbouring countries when our children can produce those and make a living,” said Kgosi Seboko.

She encouraged parents who have lands to lease such fields to their children to plough and make a living.

The sub-region’s chief education officer Ms Roseline Serumola said parents should start encouraging their children from an early age in engage activities they were passionate about.

She said this would boost their self-esteem and they would have the confidence to perform to the best of their abilities in whatever they do.

Ms Serumola expressed delight that this year some strategies had been introduced to assist struggling students.

She said in addition, study camps were formed in preparation for final year examinations, where  best-performing students tutored those who were struggling.

The goal, she said, was to produce good results for the sub-region.

The Junior Certificate overall best performer in the sub-region, 16-year-old Mr Olebogeng Dipholo earned himself a scholarship at Maru-a-Pula Secondary School.

He was the best in English, Agriculture, Commerce and Office procedure, Science and Religious Education.

Mr Dipholo said he aspired to study mining engineering in Queensland, Australia an inspiration he drew from by elder brother Tshepang who is currently studying Bio-Engineering at Sheffield University, United Kingdom.

His prizes include P1 100 cash, a travelling bag and stationary from Bolux Milling Company.

New Era College registrar, Mr Phillip Tsumake urged students to take the awards as an encouragement to keep working harder and to qualify for the best universities around the globe.

He encouraged them to focus more on technology, sciences and mathematics as the market for those careers was not yet saturated. ENDS
