Officials urge school leavers to take responsibility

16 Oct 2018

Maunatlala and Masupa primary school leavers in Tswapong area have been made aware of challenges that laid ahead.

This was during a farewell and life skills orientation session held for the Standard 7s.

Speakers from different departments and a church delegation from the area equipped them with basic life skills to use at secondary school.

Department of Social Welfare and Community Development for Palapye Sub-district social worker, Ms Maipelo Gaketlou cautioned pupils to choose friends carefully once they were at secondary and avoid peer pressure.

She urged them to believe in themselves and go with the tagline, #I will make it no matter what. Ms Gaketlou said no amount of challenges or hardship in life could define or determine their destiny.

She said they had enough support in their parents and guardians, and that whether or not they made it in life was their responsibility.

Ms Gaketlou encouraged pupils to dream big and let nothing and no one derail them.

She challenged them to work on their vision and to motivate themselves to head in the right direction.

A nurse at Maunatlala Clinic, Mr Otlametse Shapa compared them to a flower that needed to be cultivated and nurtured, saying they were special.

He urged them not to subject themselves to sexual abuse and dared them to be different.

He cautioned them against making friends who might tempt them into drugs and alcohol, saying they should always remember who they were, where they came from and their purpose in life.

Mr Shapa also urged parents to love and support their children so that they did not seek such from the wrong people.

He said parents should be their children’s best friends and should create an accommodative environment that allowed them to turn to them whenever they were faced with challenges. ENDS
