15 Oct 2018

Defence Justice and Security Minister Shaw Kgathi has commended Botswana Housing Corporation (BHC) and Cainross Heights for a job well done in the P6.6m Mmadinare police housing units construction project.

Minister Kgathi, also Bobirwa MP toured the project recently and observed that the contractor used quality material which would save government money in maintenance.

He expressed happiness that the project, entailing construction of six two-bedroomed houses and a three-bedroomed station commander’s house was almost complete with only a few items left.

The project, which commenced in April last year was expected to be completed same month this year.

Mr Kgathi explained that the area MP, Mr Kefentse Mzwinila had always advocated for the setting up of a police station and staff houses in Mmadinare saying the project indicated that there was progress.

Construction of houses for police officers according to Minister Kgathi was important in order to enhance service delivery.

He said with proper accommodation, police officers would be able to render services efficiently and effectively.

Meanwhile, Mr David Akanye representing BHC, said their assignment was to coordinate and oversee that the project was done according to specifications, on time and to also ensure the contractor, Cainross Heights adhered to the contract agreement. He said BHC was also assigned to monitor the quality of the project.

Mr Akanye mentioned that according to the master plan, other future development projects in the fenced 20ha plot where the seven police staff houses were situated, included the construction of a police charge office or station with associated facilities such as a football pitch, basketball, volley ball, netball and tennis courts.

For his part, Kgosi Galeage Holland of Mmadinare who accompanied Mr Kgathi and other senior government officials on the tour said the houses were a welcome development.

He said police had to be provided with proper accommodation for them to do their work diligently.

He explained that some of the rampant criminal cases experienced in Mmadinare included stock theft, house break-ins and theft, burglary as well as fights which took place especially at bars. ENDS
