Morupule Coal Mine has bolstered its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Palapye Junior Secondary School by giving the institution core subjects revision books worth P31 000.
Speaking in an interview, the mine’s human resource manager, Mr Tom Mongale, said the donation was meant to cement the on course three-year partnership with the school ,which commenced beginning of this year.
Mr Mongale said the partnership was meant to improve the learning environment and improve the school’s academic performance hence the donation of revision books.
He said the company experienced delays in handing over the revision books due to an elongated procurement process.
“We could have handed the revision books beginning of the school’s third term but we had some hiccups. Our procurement process had to follow protocol but we are optimistic that there is still time for Form Three learners sitting for Junior Certificate examinations to utilise them,” he said.
Earlier this year, Mr Mangole said, the mine presented 800 school bags to the learners which showed that the partnership was on the right track.
The school head, Mr Thatayaone Kefilwe thanked the mine for the spirit of benevolence pointing out that though the revision books came a bit late, they would aid learners in their preparations for JC examinations.
Mr Kefilwe assured the mine that with the aid of the revision books, learners and teachers would put extra effort to improve the JC results and attain the 60 per cent pass rate target set for next year.
Student Representative Council president, Violet Moyo expressed appreciation for the mine’s commitment towards improvement of performance at the school and promised that the books would be well looked after for the benefit of future JC candidates.
For his part, Palapye sub-region principal education officer Mr Mosiiwa Kwenaekgakala said it was a welcome development for an organisation such as the mine, through its corporate social responsibility, to assist government.
“Government has a huge challenge in terms of money and it is pleasing to see organisations coming forth to assist and I can assure you that the Ministry of Basic Education appreciates such noble gestures,” he said.
Mr Kwenaekgakala hailed the partnership between the mine and the school arguing that it would improve academic performance.
He encouraged the learners to use the revision books to supplement their study materials as they prepared for final examinations. Ends
