10 Oct 2018

Village leaders have urged community development committees to practise accountability and always consult the public on issues pertaining to change and development in their areas.

Speaking during an interview with BOPA, Kgosi Goitsekgosi Balebetse of Mokokwana said it was important for those in power to help develop their villages by practising accountability and transparency at all times.

Kgosi Balebetse noted that the existence of the Village Development Committee (VDC) office was to spearhead the development process and ensure smooth running of the daily village activities.

He said there was need for the parties to always consult with the general public and give them a heads up on the day to day running of their projects.

He said it was necessary for the community to be engaged and always kept in the loop, especially where community funds were involved.

Further, Kgosi Balebetse advised that the transition of power as the current VDC dissolves and new committee members are elected, be done in a democratic and more civilised manner.

He said it was advisable to elect the capable into office, adding that community building required determination and devotion.

He advised that the public should volunteer and never be forced to take up posts against their will.

Kgosi Phoophoo Mapena of Maunatlala applauded the VDC office in his village, saying it had demonstrated elements of accountability and transparency in its duties.

He said he had no doubt that they were driving the village in the direction of growth and development.

Kgosi Mapena noted that it was critical for the community to be informed and involved in all the developments taking place in their areas.

He urged other committees in the village to be transparent and practise record-keeping so as to promote credibility of their intensions and gain public trust. ENDs
