The Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) held a rally in Francistown on Saturday to encourage residents to register for the 2019 general elections.
UDC parliamentary hopeful, for Tonota constituency, Mr Pono Moatlhodi, said the alliance was currently focusing on lobbying Batswana to register for elections before they could campaign to be elected into government.
“We want to win the next national elections; this is the time to start preparing to win. It is upon us to ensure we get as many people to register to vote,” he added
He said people should not be registered where they did not live or come from saying it was tantamount to voter trafficking and a threat to democracy.
For his part, UDC parliamentary hopeful for Francistown East, Mr Morgan Moseki, stated that the rally was the first of its kind since it only focused on urging Batswana to register to vote, adding that such rallies were scheduled across the country during the voter registration period.
Mr Moseki said Francistown needed determined and committed members of parliament and councillors to help revive its economy.
UDC vice president and also leader of the Botswana congress party (BCP), Mr Dumelang Saleshando, urged residents of Francistown to register to vote with an idea of who they want to elect into government adding that they should be confident in voting a representative of their choice .
He assured residents that even though the UDC had many challenges, the alliance was still committed to resolving problems and winning elections adding that some challenges were meant to test their faith as a team. Ends
