Water provision govt top priority

02 Oct 2018

Kanye Administrative Authority (KAA) chairperson, Mr Tlhomamo Dibeela says water reticulation continues is at the apex of government’s priority list.

Mr Dibeela, who is also a councillor for Dilolwe ward, said this during a kgotla meeting he addressed at Tsopye last week.

He said over the years, numerous interventions, both short and long, were devised with a view to do away with water scarcity in the southern part of the country.

Such interventions, he said, demonstrated commitment by government to lessen shortage of water across the length and breadth of the country.

“The north-south carrier that has seen government fork out huge chunks of money and is long term attests to the seriousness with which government takes provision of potable water to the general public,” he said.

Furthermore, the Dilolwe councillor relayed to residents that government had disbursed  P32.5 million  towards the drilling of boreholes at Selokolela, Dilokwana to augment supply of water in Kanye and Moshupa.

Residents were also told that Tsopye, Dilolwe, Mafhikana and other wards were bowsed by Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) to boost water supply.

That withstanding, the KAA chairperson expressed unhappiness that vandalism of water pipes by some people was frustrating efforts by government to ensure uninterrupted supply of clean water.

The development, according to Mr Dibeela, has led to a shortfall in the supply of water and warned that those caught would face the music.

On the issue of Mmalekwa well that recently caused a stir, Mr Dibeela told residents that water samples from the same have been taken to find out its status.

He told residents that they would be apprised accordingly once the results were out.

Residents commended KAA for upholding the principle of consultation and were  hopeful that the water woes would be a thing of the past.

One of the residents, Mr Gaolemogwe Nkwe concurred with Mr Dibeela that vandalism should be condemned and shunned as it worked against noble gesture by government to provide clean water.

Some complained that water bills for their standpipes were bulging although the pipes were dry most of the time.

WUC official, Mr Michael Montsho said that should not be the case.

He urged residents to visit WUC offices to register their complaints and seek clarity on any issue worrying them.

Area councillor, Mr Kagisanyo Tau called on WUC to ensure continuous supply of water to keep at bay instances where people would be left with no option but to drink water from alternative sources that could pose danger. ENDS
