02 Oct 2018
Department of Curriculum Development and Evaluation (CDE) within the Ministry of Basic Education recently organised a sponsored walk to raise funds for Gakuto Primary School.
CDE director, Ms Gaotewe Mosinyi, said the sponsored walk was meant to raise funds to build an assembly point for the school and also pave the area.
She also explained that they entered into a partnership with the school last year during one of the outreach programmes of their parent ministry.
Likewise, she explained that the department had done many charitable activities in some villages across the country.
In order for the proposed project to be successful, the department engaged other sponsors such as Boitekanelo College, the Ugandan community as well as the Botswana National Olympic Committee. (BNOC)
Boitekanelo College president, Dr Tiroyaone Mampane, who was also the chief walker said hey were excited to be part of the project.
Even more exciting, he said, was knowing the positive impact they would have on the pupils’ lives.
One of the college’s interests, he said, was to improve lives, somthing that resonated well with their vision.
He urged all to contribute in order to inspire learners and make a long-lasting positive impression so that they too become responsible citizens.
Dr Mampane pledged to give the school tutorials in Mathematics and Science subjects.
He indicated that it was important to tap into children’s mindset while they were young and encouraged them to dream big so that in future they contribute to shaping the economic landscape of the country.
The Ugandan community pledged support in helping the school realise its potential.
They expressed their love for Botswana saying they felt more at home hence their active participation in various community building projects.
The school head, Ms Christinah Moatshe, thanked, sponsors saying they were excited to have people who cared for their institution and they were motivated to even do more in order to realise their potential as a school.
Although the school performed fairly in the past four years, last year their pass rate took a nose dive recording a 36 per cent pass.
The school faced several challenges like any other school, but Ms Moatshe promised to turn the fortunes of the school around with the intention to work hard and attain the 80 per cent ABC pass in the shortest time. ENDS
