Officer calls on more Batswana to register
30 Sep 2018
Principal elections officer in Kanye, Ms Ndiwo Gaopotlake, says few people were coming forth to register for the 2019 general elections.
She said in an interview that during the first two weeks of the national registration which started on September 3, 2018, Kanye North recorded 4 558 voters, Kanye South - 5 600 while 3 936 people registered in Moshupa-Manyana constituency.
By the end of the national registration during last general elections (2014), Kanye North registered 18, 641, Kanye South 18 740 while Moshupa/Manyana boasted 14 872 eligible voters.
On why people were not coming in large numbers to register, Ms Gaopotlake attributed the development to a number of reasons among them; scorching heat and the fact that November 11, 2018, which is the closing date for registration may perhaps be perceived a little distant by many.
Majority of the people who have registered according to the principal elections officer, were youth aged between 18 and 39 and elderly people aged 60 and above.
She noted middle aged people were not coming in substantial numbers to register.
Her encouragement to Batswana especially eligible voters to go register right now to avoid inconvenience that may arise at the last minute.
“They should also ensure their Omang cards have not expired. Searing heat should not deter them from coming to register,’ she said.
Polling centres across the country open at 8 am and closes at 6 p.m during the week while they open at 9 am and closes at 4 p.m on weekends. ENDS
