Men Sector tackles social ills

Men Sector in Bobonong has come up with strategies to tackle teenage pregnancy, alcohol and substance abuse as well as high rate of tuberculosis cases.
Speaking at a Men Sector workshop in Bobonong on September 26, the sector’s coordinator, Mr Kabo Kgwaraga said educational campaigns at schools and taxi motorcading sensitisation were some of the strategies to be implemented.
Mr Kgwaraga, who is also the District AIDS Coordinator, explained that the issue of teenage pregnancy was still a problem in Bobirwa.
He said in 2016 and 2017, they had an increased number of students from Matshekge Senior Secondary School dropping out of school due to pregnancy.
“Recently there was also a case in which a standard five pupil from a certain primary school in Bobonong fell pregnant,” he said.
Mr Kgwaraga explained that it had come to light that perpetrators of such pregnancy cases were not students, but elderly men from the community.
Moreover, he said tuberculosis cases were increasing in Bobirwa, adding that there were some people who quit treatment before time.
He explained that tuberculosis was a contagious disease, thereby urging people to practice safety measures such as opening either house or car windows all the time to prevent it passing from one person to the other.
Mr Kgwaraga added that alcoholism and substance abuse were also big problems in the area, saying some of the people who abused alcohol were unemployed. ENDS
