Ntime dismisses mayors speech
26 Sep 2018
Gaborone City Council (GCC) specially nominated councillor Mr Kagiso Ntime, has described Mayor Kagiso Thutlwe’s full council opening speech as uninspiring and lacking hope.
Commenting on the mayor’s speech during the ongoing full council meeting, Mr Ntime said the opening remarks painted a gloomy picture because projects for this financial year had not yet started.
Councillor Ntime however blamed this on both the political and administrative leadership of the council as it seemed to be at a snail’s pace.
He further urged both the mayor and town clerk offices to swiftly act on allegations of corruption said to be rocking the council.
Mr Ntime also raised concern over unjustifiable selection of same councillors who always embark on international trips without affording other councillors the same opportunity.
On a positive note, Councillor Ntime praised constituency funding for its success in some areas in Gaborone, noting that while some people initially dismissed the programme, it had proved to be bearing tangible fruits.
For his part, councillor for Marulamantsi ward, Mr Sergeant Kgosietsile, urged the council to implement the GCC Strategic Plan of 2014-2023, saying the plan would continue to gather dust.
He also said the mayor and town clerk should be held accountable for slow implementation of projects.
Councillor Kgosietsile further decried poor supervision of tender evaluations, adding that most of them were usually delayed.
He said the act was a sign of complacency and laziness on the part of officers responsible.
He further raised concern over rampant break-ins in primary schools though there are security companies which have been engaged by the council to guard the properties. ENDS
