Prize giving ceremonies motivate pupils
24 Sep 2018
Recognising good performance through award of prizes will always motivate learners to strive for excellence.
SPEDU corporate communications manager, Ms Sheila Moribame, said this when giving a keynote address at Makhubu Junior Secondary School prize giving ceremony recently.
Ms Moribame said excellent performance in academic or non-academic activities must be acknowledged.
And, she called on pupils to have the zeal to exert more effort with due diligence if they wanted to succeed.
She also advised pupils to have a character that diverted their intention away from deviant behaviour.
Ms Moribame encourged pupils to joing schools’ Scripture Union (SU) clubs, noting that in some instances girls were the only ones participating in such clubs.
She said the clubs instilled discipline and also taught students to know God.
Makhubu school head, Mrs Sealogane Modipe-Osentse, said the school had been performing well in the past years. She said this was all due to the hard work of teachers, staff, pupils and the community.
She stated that student performance was also good because of the positive role parents played in their children’s education. She urged parents to pay attention to the children’s’ use of social media and what they indulged in mainstream media. She said despite the good impact ICT had on the learning process, absorbing negative things from the network could impact negatively on education and life in general.
Mrs Modipe-Osentse said her school had introduced initiatives such as the merit badge awarded to students who performed well on a monthly basis as well as best teacher and employee award to motivate everyone to do their best.
She said those who performed well were treated to lunch at one of the hotels to appreciate their effort.
Chairperson of the Parents Teachers Association, Mr Sekao Tumelo, commended the school for its performance particularly the teachers.
He said teachers had to be commended for their effort in teaching and moulding children. He also acknowledged parents for playing a meaningful role in their children’s education.
SPEDU pledged P10 000 to the school while Mrs Moribame donated P2 500.
She also topped up, Ms Kopano Mafunga P300 cash donation to the best performing pupil with a P200.
Ms Mafunga also handed over a P500 cheque from the deputy district commissioner’s office to the school to motivate pupils to do their best to get the good result and win prizes.
Teachers and support staff also received prizes for contributing towards the school’s good performance. ENDS
