24 Sep 2018

Concerted efforts to mount road blocks, educate and enforce traffic road regulations will soon start since independence holidays are just around the corner.

In an interview, station manager for the Department of Road Transport and Safety in Bobonong, Ms Boemo Sekgweng  says the road blocks are aimed at curbing road fatalities as many Batswana would be travelling to different destinations across the country.

Ms Sekgweng, also secretary for Bobirwa District Road Safety Committee, said that the roadside educational campaign held under the theme; 2020 Target: Reduce Road Fatalities and  Serious Injuries by 50 per cent was proposed to start from  September 25 to October 2 2018.

On other issues, Ms Sekgweng said that Bobirwa District Road Safety Committee would on October 17 organise an activity aimed at improving knowledge and skills in road safety, targeting accident prone areas.

She explained that the activity, scheduled to be held in Bobonong, would focus on installing reflectors on donkey carts to ensure proper use of  carts at night, adding that they would also sensitise donkey carts riders about the dangers of riding donkey carts under the influence of alcohol.

Ms Sekgweng said it was not only car drivers who were victims of road accidents, but donkey cart riders could also be victims of road accidents.

For his part, Bobonong station traffic officer, Inspector Thatayaone David, also chairperson of Bobirwa District Road Safety committee has encouraged members of the committee to work together during the independence holidays.

He said it was only through the team spirit and  hard work that they could attain their targeted goals.

Inspector David encouraged the committee members to remain determined and be committed to put Bobirwa on the map.ENDS
