Kasane residents express need to look after river

Residents of Kasane have raised concern over indiscriminate waste disposal especially in areas along the Chobe River.
In an interview, one of the residents Mr Culture Maruza said the economy of Chobe was reliant on the Chobe River therefore it was important for residents to take care of the river.
Mr Maruza, who also plies his trade as a guide, noted that the tourism sector contributed to the country’s economy and has boosted the region’s economy through creation of employment hence it was inportant keep the river clean to attract more tourists.
Another resident, Mr Machana Lunake, who is also a fisherman, said there was no doubt that the river was bringing life to the people of Chobe, and that it was important for the council to place dustbins in strategic places.
He said the dustbins could be accompanied by signboards reminding people to dispose their refuse appropriately.
Kasane central councillor, Mr Sharps Munihangu said there were areas where the council had provided litter bins.
He said residents should bear in mind that the river played an important role in attracting tourists that flocked to Kasane therefore it was important to keep it clean at all times.
Mr Munihangu said tourism was one of the sectors that boosted the economy of Chobe and created employment for many Batswana.
He urged residents to take responsibility and organise clean up campaigns along the river banks to make Chobe River one of the cleanest rivers in the continent. ENDS
