MP warns against social media abuse
23 Sep 2018
Member of Parliament for Ramotswa, Mr Samuel Rantuana, has cautioned Batswana against abuse of social media because such constitutes an offence.
The MP was addressing a kgotla meeting in Mogobane as part of his constituency tour.
He said parliament had passed a bill that criminalised habits popular in social media such as sending obscene pictures.
Mr Rantuana said the amended cybercrime and computer related crimes bill would strengthen the existing laws to deal with criminal activities carried out through computers.
He, therefore, said social media users, particularly the youth should be careful not to send obscene pictures and demeaning messages since that could incriminate them.
The MP further cautioned against relying too much on internet, saying there were numerous crimes committed using cyber, such as human trafficking.
He warned constituents not to trust strangers they meet online, who would come up with fancy promises.
On other issues, the Ramotswa legislator stated that the Department of Civil and National Registration would be doing away with registering XX in the national identity cards for those who are not sure about their dates of birth.
He made an appeal to the residents to approach the department with dates which they think were suitable to describe their dates of birth.
On other issues, Mr Rantuana told the residents that the government has also passed a bill to ensure that trusts were audited.
He said trusts made a lot of money which at times go unaccounted for hence the need for auditing.
Councillor Dilo Abram of Mogobane said the Mogobane Conservation and Development Trust had started its work and were hopeful that the Trust would deliver. ENDS
