Forest conservation key to climate change mitgation

Government has identified sustainable forest management and conservation as one of the notions that can deliver on climate change mitigation and adaptation goals.
Minister of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism, Mr Tshekedi Khama said during the 9th Forest Conservation Botswana (FCB) annual general meeting in Gaborone recently.
He said conservation was important irrespective of position, “where people are placed in the society and governance.”
Mr Khama commended FCB for helping the country to mitigate against climate change, through development and protection of forests.
The minister assured the meeting of his financial support to FCB and promised to continually seek funding for FCB to succeed in its plans.
He noted that FCB efforts were for the benefits of the future of the children, the country and the planet at large.
For his part, FCB chief executive officer, Mr Joshua Moloi, said FCB had a good financial management system and clean financial audits.
Therefore, they managed to maintain their staff members with no staff turn-over, noting that it was an indication of an organisation with good future.
He said the annual general meeting marked attainment of the 9th clean audit.
US ambassador representative, Ms Alyson McFarland, said since 2006, FCB had grown into a more financial institute, administratively agile, technically adapt and strategically focused conservation entity.
Ms McFarland commended FCB for its key role in empowering the community in sustainable use of the forests and their protection.
She said Botswana, with the contribution of FCB, was strategically placed to achieve significant forests conservation impact.
Meanwhile, a consultant at Pivotal Aims, Ms Orekolotse Koloi noted that FCB’s corporate strategy was developed to serve a purpose. ENDS
