Gaborone United elders calls for review of clubs constitution

Gaborone United elders committee, which has been at the helm of the club, has called for establishment of a constitutional review committee.
Presenting their report to Gaborone United general membership on September 15, elders committee member, Judge Mookodi, said the constitutional review committee should be appointed as soon as possible to bring the constitution in line with the business of the club.
He said there was also need to have committees supporting National Executive Committee (NEC) made up of professionals where practically possible.
“It was our view that NEC in its current set up is short on capacity, in finance committee, and marketing committee,” he said.
Talking about the state of the club, Mookodi said Gaborone United had been through tremendous difficulties in the previous years.
He said the club had seen unprecedented difficulties such as failure to field a full side during official games, adding that as a result of a negative cash-flow, the playing and technical staff had not been paid for seven months with salary arrears amounting to more than P2 Million.
“The total of all creditors was that this figure was a moving target. Every other week amounts would appear that were not initially included which indicated an underlying problem running right across the club, that of lack of management capacity that is process driven,” he said.
Talking about unlawful termination of contracts, he said a number of contracts had been awarded in favour of employees for unfair dismissal.
He said Gaborone United had to bear the brunt of paying amounts that might had been negotiated lower, adding that in the Appiah case the club had to pay an unexplainable P374 000.
On poor record keeping, he said without proper record keeping the club was always going to fall short in the maintenance of financial audit and other statutory requirement such as those of registrar of societies.
The non –conformity of the statutory requirement, he said brings about the risk of the club being unregistered.
He said the keeping of the club membership records were fundamental to the constitution aspect of the club. ENDS
